Tinderbox Ski School is a team of fully qualified independent ski instructors and mountain guides based in Chamonix. Headed up by Chris Fecher a British pro freeskier, Ski guide and Avi Geek Chris says “The aim is to create rounded skiers that can share in enjoying this wonderful playground”
About you
Skiing is all about movement, and having the ability to be flexible around a foundation of solid skills/technique. It’s not about skiing one way and one way only, we’re all different shapes and sizes after all and we all ski with our own personality and quirks.
To make us all fit into the same box or ski the same way would be not only reduce our potential but also stifle our creativity making skiing less fun. Spurred on by this Tinderbox ski school delivers private ski lessons, ski courses and guiding based around your specific needs.
To us this makes a lot of sense, after all the faster you progress and the more fun you have the more you’ll get out of your skiing holiday. That’s why, it really is all about you!

About us – Chris Fecher Tinderbox Ski School
A mountain professional from the heart of UK, I’ve been lucky enough to ski all over the world from Chile and Argentina to NZ and most of Europe. I’ve based myself in the Chamonix Valley during the winter season for over 20 years. People often ask me “why Chamonix” and I most often reply ‘because I came here as a young lad with aspirations of skiing Chamonix’s famous steep slopes just like my childhood hero’s Glen Plake and Scot Schmidt’. Most visiting skiers get the Chamonix vibe, and come back year on year. It’s a very special place with something for everyone. Surrounded by a valley steeped in a rich alpine history, with tails of extreme mountaineering and skiing echoing around its many jagged peaks.
My skiing career really took off in Chamonix taking me from dirtbag ski bum in the early 90’s to ski model and international freeride competitor. I was really lucky at this time to have been given the opportunity to shoot photo’s with many of the Alp’s finest ski photographers. The images of my skiing antics then started to appear in the UK snow press, magazines like Fall Line Skiing really helped out by printing these images of me. From then on, I began working with these photographers to produce action ski images and stories from my expeditions and experiences. Traveling and competing around the globe became the norm, as did waiting around for the best days to go out shooting. Many might say I was living the dream and to be honest that’s kind of how it all felt.
With my sponsors support, I was able to live this lifestyle which really was a dream come true in many ways. Around the year 2000 I started to look at how I could share this experiences and knowledge to the up and coming skiers looking to take a similar path to myself. I ran a number of summer training camps and Indoor freestyle comps in order to offer these young rippers a chance to showcase their talent. Although hugely torn between training towards the guides course or becoming a full cert ski teacher I decided to go for the ski teaching qualification. The remit includes the ability to guide and teach off-piste skiing and ski touring and that’s really what I wanted to be able to do, so the decision was made and a Chamonix ski school was born
